Behavioral Consistency in Business Process Models

Real-world business process models (BPM) are complex, with many activities related in several ways. Complex processes can create behavioral anomalies (e.g., deadlocks , execution of useless activities). Unfortunately, the usual way to avoid these anomalies is by deening simple-minded models that inhibit the natural parallelism of activities and abstract away the handling of exceptional cases. This paper deenes and studies the simple control property of BPMs, which implies deadlock freedom and no useless activities, formalizes the concepts of threads and subthreads of control, relates threads and simple control, presents a novel exception handling mechanism for BPMs, presents the incremental case composition method for BPM behavior, and shows that the method leads to realistic models with simple control.
